Goal #5

Neither terribly significant in length, but breathtaking in content. Two hikes in the Willamette Valley. One on the way to Eugene; Silver Falls State Park. The other before heading home; Spencer’s Butte.

Silver Falls is a 5 mile loop (or 7 mile loop if you get on the road early enough) that takes you atop, around, under and behind a series of 10 waterfalls. A woman walked toward me as I hit the trail and warned me that the waterfall had no water, just a trickle. If she would have gone a little further, past the fall that is reliant on snowfall, she would have been more than satisfied.

From the top of a 100-foot fall. The fence was gone.

After Goal # 7, Tom and I hit Spencer’s Butte, a short hike to the top of a peak on the outskirts of Eugene. Quick and beautiful, the lower section is covered in a canopy of changing leaves, the top rocky and grassy, overlooking the town and the valley.
